During the class of Computer Aided Manufacturing, the learning objectives are that you should learn how to use newer technology like a CNC Machine, 3D printer, or Laser Cutter. By utilizing these machines, you will have to learn how to use Mastercam and Solidworks to do your work on them. All of this is valuable to my future because it is teaching me new ways of using technology in the real world.
The project that I am submitting as an artifact for Computer Aided Manufacturing had the following learning objectives of having to use Mastercam and design our piece of wood. At first, I thought this was going to be hard for me because it was my first actual time using Mastercam and then, going to the CNC Machine to cut my board. The prototype we had to do was create our board on Mastercam, and we had to get the dimension right, so when we went to the other room, we would have the same dimensions as our board. In the board, you needed to have your name written in the center and required to make sure you had a good depth of cut, and your setting speed was not too fast. The reason for this was because we did not want our boards to fly off the machine.
After this, we had to make sure we were using the right tool or bit. I used the thicker one which is the 424 v bit. That gave my name more of a curvier appeal. If you want your name to be more precise or accurate, you would need to use the 421 v bit which is thinner and pointer. Just keep in mind that if someone before you used a different bit, make sure to change it when it is your turn. It won't appear how you intended it to come out.
You will also, need to put your design on a thumb drive which Mr.Roach will provide for you. Then, you take it to the CNC Machine and uploaded to the Techno CNC program. You will have to preview your file to see that everything is fine. Then, you can start putting your board on the CNC platform with double-sided tape. This will keep it in place. You will then, have to home your board to the machine this will help it by knowing where it should start and finish. Also, you will zero out the x and y axis, continuing with the touch off plate. Then, you will get approval from Mr.Roach, and the process will start, and in a couple of minutes, your board will be done.
The next assignment we did was the same as our prototype, but we just needed to add an image from the web. I decided to make a sign for my dad's soccer store because I thought it would make a cute gift for him. Also, I got to brag a little bit and tell him that I know how to use a CNC Machine and make cool wood designs. This was the first time I felt like I knew how to use these machines by myself. I got to help many of my peers, and it felt good. All of this required me to work with my friends and Mr.Roach to understand what I was doing and how to do it properly.
Throughout this process listed above, I have realized that I learn by working collaboratively with my peers and making sure I ask my teacher if how I am doing my work is correct. Also, it taught me how to use Mastercam to create many designs that I wanted to do and turn them into wooden designs. I have grown so much since my start at Diamond Tech because when I first came here, I never thought I would actually learn how to use these fantastic new machines. It was something so new for me because I was never exposed to it at my old school.
I have demonstrated the first SLO of applying technological skills for the 21st century. I showed this by learning how to use the CNC Machine and using Mastercam to create my design. Throughout all of this, I also learned how to use the Laser Engraver for my coaster and when I made my coaster holder I used the 3D printer. These all link back to the course because I learned all these well-needed skills for the future.
The second SLO I showed was thinking critically and creatively because I had to come up with my design for the wood sign. I used a soccer ball from the web and used a font that made my text look sporty. Also, I had to choose in between two designs which like I said the first one was for my dad's store and it had the soccer ball with the store name on it. Then, the second design was a rose with text on it, but I felt like it was too simple. This is important because it shows that I can pick in between two designs and start on my work right away and not waste time.
Overall the most important things I have learned in this class this year are that you don't need to give up if you don't understand something. You need to ask your teacher or a peer to help you explain how to do the work. Even if you have to call Mr. Roach up every two minutes as I did. The reason for this was because I wanted to learn the material and do something hands on. I knew that this would benefit me in the future if I ever get assigned something like this in college.
